Mason is Growing

Mason has been doing real good. He is still out of the incubator and has been able to keep his temp by himself. On last nights visit he was weighing in at 4.7 1/2. We are still doing non nutritive nursing since he does not have a gag reflex yet. He has been latching on good, we did have a little temper tantrum the other day and was getting frustrated.

Im doing good still tired and feel like i can sleep alllll day. Pumping is getting so old now I have been doing for three weeks now.  I feel like quitting but i know im doing it all for Mason.

Raul had his other two wisdom teeth pulled yesterday so he is looking like a chipmunk again

Mason got to nurse for the 1st time

So yesterdays visit went very well.  The doctor said that we could try nursing. So he was on for a little bit since preemies get tired very quickly but while he was on he seemed to have a good latch. He was able to get some milk that way, but we still feed him thru the tube. Eventually the nurse said that he will only nurse and they will weigh him all the time to make sure he is gaining wait. Mason also had two soiled diapers (most people dont get excited but i do). Raul could not changed them he said we might have to let go of the # of soiled diapers he has to change.  Talking about diapers i have been doing some research on cloth diapers and i think we might give them a try (crazy right).  Some of the good ones are a little pricey at first but in the long run i is cheeper than disposables.  Im thinking ounce Mason is home ill go buy the different kinds a local store here offers and see what works for us.

Frustrating Day

So todays visit did not go well. Not because of Mason he is doing soooo good. He is out of the incubator and that is one step closer to coming home. I had an issue with his nurse today. First it was the first time she was looking after Mason. During my visit i always try to get there at 11 because thats one of his feeding times. During this time Raul and I take his temp change his diaper and i hold him kangaroo style while he eats. Its very important to me that i do this for him since i dont get to spend all day with him. Well today i got there 20 min before 11 and when i go there he was almost done with his feeding he had been changed so basically everything was done. I got very upset because thats the whole point i get there at that time. So then i wanted to hold him under my shirt and the nurse was very hesitant to undress him. From the research i have done holding a baby, especially a premie, kangaroo style is the best thing you can do. So we went back and fort about it but I hope I made it clear that this is our routine. Another thing that upset me was here views on breast feeding. I am so glad I have such good influences around me and  that I have chosen to educate myself so I can stand up for what I believe in.

Our boy

Mason has been doing real good. They have increased his milk to 30cc. He started wearing clothes a couple of days ago, that was exciting. I have been able to take him out a lot longer now. Its so much easier to hold him now since he does not have all the wires from the IV hooked up to him. When i went to see him yesterday he was wide awake the whole time. He just stared at me it was so neat. He has been doing really good maintaining his body temperature so hopefully by the end f the week he will be moved to a big boy bed (crib).

Last night I went to The Leche League International meeting on Schofield. I got some info on how I could help Mason out, but it as good to see other moms who breast feed.

Getting better

We had a very good visit with Mason today. He was off the IV and off the photo therapy, so we go to hold him the whole time we were there. They have increased his milk to 25cc now and i go to hold him kangaroo style while he ate. Also Raul took is temperature and changed his diaper (we are working on meeting daddys diaper quota..lol). Also today he had a onesie on and and was wrapped up in blankets. This was the first time he had clothes on since before he had been doing the photo therapy he was just in a diaper. We are very excited that he has been doing so well Praise God for He does amazing things!!!!!!

What a week we had

So its been a crazy two weeks for us. First i was in labor one week and then baby is here the next. Its been hard driving to the hospital everyday but it has been worth it to see Mason. Its nice to get to the hospital and for them to tell me how good he is doing.  Not only have I had lots of thing going on but like i mentioned in my last blog Raul got his wisdom teeth taken out yesterday. He was doing good all day but when he started feeling the pain he took his meds. For some reason after that he told me he was feeling very weird and that he should go to the hospital. So I drove him down there. Luckily when they examined him he was fine but they told him he cant ake those med anymore and that when they pull his wisdom teeth from the other side to ask for a different pain medication.  So since we were already at Tripler i went to see Mason. So he is doing good and they took his IV out YEAH! That means less stuff on him. Since it was his feeding time i went ahead and took is temp, changed his diaper and helped with the feeding. They gave him 20cc last night. He was still under photo-therapy but they are suppose to check this morning. Today i wont make it to the hospital till the afternoon since we did not get home till 3am and mamma has to get some sleep. NE thats its for this morning.

Todays visit

Mason still has a bit of jaundice but it did not surprise me since when they get mammas milk it usually goes up a bit. They will check it again tomorrow and the nurse said it should go down because his skin is not yellow and he has began to poop. I changed his diaper today and it was confirmed that the poop has arrived! He was pretty calm today. He started getting  little fussy around 1:30pm but ounce I changed his diaper and he ate he went right back to sleep. Daddy was unable to go see him today he had two of his wisdom teeth pulled out. Hopefully he will be feeling a lil better this weekend. Sunday we are planning on attending the baby expo at the Blaidsdale (i dont know if thats how you spell it) with Leslie and Mike. They will be having prizes and different vendors from all over the island. Its hard finding baby stuff around here so Im looking forward to knowing what's all out there.

Mason

Our son is doing good. Yesterday Wednesday I got to hold him the whole time I was there, and they fed him while I was holding kangaroo style. By doing this he can get use to getting a full belly while being on mom. Im very proud of Raul he held Mason . Raul had been a little nerves because Mason is so small but Raul did very well with him and Mason really seemed to enjoy it.

Todays visit his jaundice is up a little bit so we did not get to hold him :(. They increased his milk intake to 15cc now and daddy got to feed him. Also we tag teamed Masons diaper today.

I read my first book today

I read "If you Give a Pig a Pancake Today" while Mason was on my chest Kangaroo style. This is the first of many stories to come. We found out he sleeps just like daddy today, with his mouth wide open. It was funny because we were trying to get a picture with his mouth closed but it was not happening.

When it as time for him to go back into e incubator he started crying he really enjoyed being on momma. I think he makes the cutest lil faces.

I got to hold him today since his jaundice had gone down. I love being able to do this and i know its very comforting for him as well. He is still doing good and he is still getting my milk. Right now they are giving him about a teaspoon every 3 hours.

When they first put him on my chest he was wide awake

Mommas Milk for the 1st Time

So I was able to pump some milk last night and this morning when I went to see him they gave him his first feeding. So im very excited im able to provide for him now. I feel like I can help him out more too. He made the cutes little smile while they were feeding him, I guess it felt good to have something in his tummy (or he was just dreaming of some girls..lol). They told me they will try to put some drops in his mouth too so he can taste it with his passy, that way he can associate sucking with the milk. Right now he is under the light for jaundice. They started that on Sunday. The only drawback is i cant really hold him while he is getting this treatment. N/e the feeding was quite a eventful milestone for me. I cant wait to go see him tomorrow

Right after Mason was born

Mason Kai Madrid is HERE!

So went into early labor this week and my son was born May 9, 2008 at 7:17 am. He weighed 3.9lbs and was 16 inch long. The doctors tried everything they could to stop he contractions and slow down the labor but baby was determined to come to this world!

I started cramping on Monday.

Tuesday i went to the hospital and they checked me and i was actually having contractions and I had effaced 50%, they gave me a shot to try to stop the contraction but it did not work. I kept me for about 5 hours and i had not changed so i went home.

Wednesday, my contractions got a little harder but i managed them my putting a rice sock on my back and abdomen and my resting all day. That night i was not able to sleep because of the contractions.

Thursday 5 am i called my midwife and she told me to come back to the hospital. My friend Leza drove me and when Raul got there they checked me again. I had dilated 1 centimeter/effaced 90%/ baby was at -2. This is where i started crying cause i knew exacly what that ment. My midwife reassured me it was nothing I had done, Some women go into premature Labor for no reason. Its was still scary, because I had taken such good care of myself. I stayed at the hospital till noon and was released because again there was no change so it seemed like it had slowed down. By this time i had been switched over to a doctor and he told me to take it easy and come back Friday at noon to check my cervix and see if anything had changed. He also said if i felt different before then to come back to the hospital. So I went home and managed my contractions by using the breathing my Bradley teacher showed us, the rice sock, birthing ball and the main thing trying to relax during the contractions. Raul also helped by massaging my back and leading on him and rocking. This really helped.

Thursday night around 9pm we decided to pack our bags grab our pillows and head out to the hospital. They checked my cervix and I was 2 centimeter/90% effaced/-1. I was admitted into the hospital and given pills to slow down/stop contraction. They did not work so as last resort i was given magnesium and put on a catheter(worse than labor). I had contractions all night, i had a great nurse that would come in and put pillows around me and warm blankets. This also helped me manage pain.

Around 2 am Doctor checked me again and i was 3cent/100%/baby at 0. They gave a steroid shot and antibiotics to help the babies lungs mature quickly. They were suppose to give me a second shot of steroids at 8am but we did not make it that far my nurse said she had to give me a pain med thru my IV, I told her i did not wanted(my whole natural birth thing) but she said that I had to take it to try to relax my uterus and slow down the contraction. Again baby was not having it, thru all this i was still having contractions. My coach Raul really helped me manage the pain during the night. During a contraction he would remind me to take deep breaths, to relax and not panic or tense up and he would massage me during the contractions. Feeling his skin really helped me. We about killed each other though cause I would constantly tell him where to massage and how to do it. Plus me moaning during the contractions was driving him nuts. Raul was very tired and would fall asleep so then i would get mad at him. Looking back now we both think its funny and laugh about it.

Around 7am I told Raul I had to go "doo doo" (exact words people) Rau said i was just panicking and needed to relax and breath. I yelled at him cause he was trying to keep me on the bed (remember i had ivs and all this stuff strapped to me, but i was determined to get up). So the doctor came in checked me and I was fully dilated. In a second all these people came into the room they took the bed apart so i could push they sat me up and the doctor broke my water (ounce again i yelled at the doc cause i wanted everything to happen natural but she said she had to break it cause i was at 10 cent already). The a nurse said if they had gotten an epidural and I was like NO we are not doing no epidural! Then a doc said something about forceps and i was like NO we are not doing that either! I had a nurse to my left and Raul to my right. Ounce again Raul was a good coach by reminding me to only hold my breath as long as "I" could and not as long as the nurse was counting. I had about three contractions held my breath about 3 time during each and Baby came out. I did not do a lot of pushing it just a couple of minutes it all came really fast. Im very proud i was somewhat able to achieve a natural child birth. It was very important for Raul and I for our son not to come out full of unnecessary meds. As soon as baby came out he was crying. They cleaned him Raul got to cut the cord and then they brought him to me.

Mason is doing great like i said he was not had to have help breathing. That was my biggest concern because his lungs at this age are not fully developed but he is a strong little guy. It was hard leaving him at the hospital but I get to go see him whenever I want. Ounce his sucking reflex gets strong we will try to breast feed. For now im just having to use a pump so he can get mommies good stuff...lol. He is in a incubator right now to help him regulate his temperature. Ounce they move him to a crib i will be able to board at the hospital till he can come home.

7 months

This is my 7 month picture. I have been taking pictures with the same outfit. The T-shirt is definitely getting snug and I dont have to use the pants draw string anymore. On a previous blog i posted pictures of month 1 to 5 so yall can compare how much my belly has grown

My belly is looking much rounder now. My skin feels tight and I can feel the baby move every day. The line in the middle is starting to show now, and my belly button is getting stretched

The belly is starting to get in the way now when it comes to tying my shoes, putting socks on, picking stuff up from the floor, reaching for stuff, eve when i sit sometimes.

28 week appt. & Bradley class #4

I had my appt. on tuesday April 29. I got he results back for the glucose test and it was good. My midwife measured my belly and it was 28 inches. It was 22 inches 4 weeks ago. My weight was 146 which she got a bit concerned because I put on 12 pounds in 4 weeks. She told me to weigh myself every week that I should be gaining about 1 pound every week. I understand every women is different and does not gain the "text book" weight. I have been eating very healthy so I know its not bad weight gain. The thing that I think about is that if I gain more weight than I need to its more work to do after the baby comes to try to burn it off. Raul could not go with me to this appointment but one question he had was if he could cut the umbilical cord with a hunting/pocket knife. My midwife thought it was kinda funny but that she did not see the problem with it if it was still packaged but she emailed the other 5 midwifes to see what they thought. So we should get our answer at our next appointment. We also discussed that my feet hand hands have been swelling. My blood pressure is good so my midwife said that some women swell and some dont so i happen to be one of the unfortunate ones that will swell.

Our Bradley class was awesome this week for me at least. We practiced relaxation and the hubbies leaned how to massage our legs and feet. It felt really good since my feet have been swollen lately. Raul did a great job with the massage! It really helped me get some of the swelling down and the next day my feet did not hurt has much. So bravo for my hunny!
